West Africa is particularly exposed to the impacts of climate change, especially flooding. Ten of the twelve African counties most affected by floods in 2019 are located in West Africa. The causes of these floods include an increase in the frequency of intense rainfall and rapid urbanisation which is correlated with poor or insufficient urban planning. The vulnerability to climate change impacts is associated with the underlying socio-economic vulnerabilities of West African communities which make their living conditions more difficult.
It is in this context that Practical Action, through the Zurich Flood Resilience Alliance, is committed to helping to strengthen the resilience of communities most vulnerable to flood risks. The Practical Action team in Senegal will be hosting a webinar which aims to encourage the exchange of information and knowledge sharing between flood risk management stakeholders in West Africa, with a particular focus on improving resilience practices.
