Loss and damage from climate change: Action to avert, minimize and address loss and damage from a humanitarian perspective
Date: 7 June 2023, 11:45 – 13:00 CEST
Venue: Berlin room, World Conference Center Bonn, Germany
Hosted by: International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Mercy Corps, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), World Food Programme (WFP)
Countries and communities who have contributed the least to the climate crisis are suffering losses and damages to lives, health, livelihoods and harvests caused by more frequent and severe climate events such as cyclones, floods, droughts and heatwaves.
While the humanitarian community has valuable experiences and expertise to share, it does not cover the full spectrum of solutions and resources required to respond to loss and damage. The humanitarian system is also reaching its breaking point: It was not set up to respond to the increasing scale and severity of climate-related disasters, at a time when humanitarian funding gaps are growing. We need greater ambition as well as partnerships, innovation and collaboration across sectors in order to better protect and support people facing climate-induced losses and damages.
This session will highlight the roles and limits of humanitarian action to avert, minimize and address loss and damage, as well as discuss key principles that should be applied for solutions and funding to respond to loss and damage.
Reaching the most vulnerable: Climate action in fragile and conflict affected contexts
Date: 7th June 2023, 10:15-11:30 CEST
Venue: Berlin room, World Conference Center Bonn, Germany.
Hosted by: International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR)
With Relief, Recovery and Peace an emerging theme for COP28, this session explores how climate action can reach fragile and conflict affected communities facing multiple sources of risk – advancing partnerships and approaches to build adaptive capacity and address loss and damage in these vulnerable contexts.
A recording of this session is now available.
InsuResilience Annual Forum Breakout Session 1: Weathering the Risks – Addressing the Protection Gap when Conflict and Climate Collide
Date: 9th June 2023, 14:00-15:30
Venue: Gustav-Stresemann-Institute, Bonn, Germany – also online
The InsuResilience Annual Forum brings together the Partnership and the broader resilience community to drive joint action on Climate and Disaster Risk Finance and Insurance (CDRFI).
This session will explore how the identified challenges and constraints surrounding climate finance in fragile and conflict-affected contexts can be addressed, based on learnings of the humanitarian community.
